For the past 2 years I’ve been working on a new body of work about the woods next to my house. The resulting images have allowed me to explore how we relate to the abandoned rural landscape in Britain today. Formally a quarry, the woods have been left to grow unchecked for at least the past 30 years, and the result is a complicated mix of thick forest and sparse areas of quarried land. Here is a sneak preview of the work, more of which will be shown this saturday at my talk at The Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.

For anyone in Manchester, I’m giving a talk at the Whitworth Art Gallery again this Saturday as part of their Alternative Camera Club program. For those who met me there in late January it’ll be pretty much the same run through of my work but I am in the midst of editing my latest piece on a forest, so that may make a showing…

Anyway, I think the schedule has me talking from 10.30am and if you come along please feel free to ask lots of questions, it makes the whole experience a lot more interactive!

More information can be found courtesy of the Whitworth Adult Programme

In another piece of great news my friend David Axelbank pointed out yesterday that I had won in the UK category of this year’s Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward 2010, which I’d managed to miss in my inbox! This is great news and I’m honoured to join a long list of friends from both previous years and this year who have also been winners in this great search for new talent.

Must say a congratulations to Adam Dean who is another of the ex-Dalian crowd, and Liz Hingley and Kurt Tong who I met at last year’s Rhubarb International Review and are both doing fantastic work. Also there are two photographers I know from my Newport days in the Honourable Mentions, Stephen Kelly who is an incredibly talented award winning documentary photographer and likewise Dominic Hawgood who is an amazing portrait photographer who has previously shown work in the National Portrait Gallery. Interestingly there are quite a few names familiar from last year’s Fresh Faced and Wild Eyed show at the Photographer’s Gallery that I was involved in so congratulations to all of them.

The book of all the winners and honourable mentions is available now from Magenta at their website

I’m really pleased to announce that my work has been included in the latest issue of Portfolio Catalogue. This is amazing news for me. Back in about 1999 or 2000 my then tutor Dick Brownridge held up Portfolio as where to look for what is happening in contemporary photography so to have my own work featuring a decade later is an honour indeed. If you have never come across this title before, you really need to have a look. It’s subscription and also available from exclusive bookshops and galleries in London. The Photographer’s Gallery bookshop is the place I would go for it but don’t take your credit card -their range of books is fantastic and I can’t leave without spending more than i should!

The issue features work by some really great photographers alongside myself, notably Nadav Kander, Edward Burtynsky, Ed Kashi, Guy Tillim, IIan Godfrey, Teresa Eng, Dana Popa and essays by David Bate, Simon Baker, Francis Hodgson, Michael J Watts and Kobena Mercer.

To get the issue straight from Portfolio or to subscibe, visit their website. Issue #51 with my work is listed here

Deep Sleep is, in the words of it’s creators, “…a quarterly online photography magazine founded by and featuring work from a small group of contributors who share the same office space in Shoreditch, East London. Each issue (published in February, May, August and November) will be on a specific theme and guest contributors are also invited to submit a set of images based on that theme.”

Well their theme for issue two was Alien and as such they are featuring my work from Thames Town, which is jolly nice of them (too much Blackadder goes Forth means the word ‘jolly’ must make an appearence).

You can see the whole issue here: Deep Sleep

I feel a bit like at school having to explain why my homework is late butseeing as I am currently dogless I have little excuse, except I have not had access to a scanner and a photography blog with no photos just isn’t the same…

Anyway, I’ve been working on a few personal projects recently all concerning our relationship to the land in one form or another, details will be posted on here soon I’ll post a bit later on different developments in the past 5 months, there have been a few interesting ones! But for now I will leave you with a recent image…
