Hey Dave,

Up Tai Shan (the mountain that looks over Xinghai and Shahekou District in general), go off the path up the mountain (approach from the path leading up from the estate between Heping and Nansha Jia), veer left when passing a derelict roofless building up more of a goat track than a regular path and there's a nice packed earth clearing some guys do early morning tai chi on.

If you've not been there before pop over. Roughly on the North-North-East side of the hill.

That article is from 1995. The Russian tourists visiting then were much, much differnet now. Then it was the rich and illegally rich. Now it's your average Boris and Natasha.

Not much current day relevance can really be gleaned from that, other than they predcited 200,000 visitors "in a few years."

In fact, it didn't hit 200,000 until 2007. As it turns out, some people it's far, far more than that.

Property developers, panicked by the drop in western buying, are making up numbers to make Pattaya seem to be the hottest Russian proeprty market on the planet.

I've just published my own article on the deceiption and number bending. You can read about it here:

People in the West do not like to acknowledge Putin's accomplishments. In fact, west prefers Russia to disintegrate into 100 little countries that have no power or influence to balance the west's bs.

Hello dave......the coincidences continue. I have just come a cross your blog and I Thought I would surprise you with a response. Very jealous of your opportunity in China, enjoy it, stay in touch and keep up the lovely imagery. Quite possible we could do a show or something together in Axbridge when you return.
