Ok, so a bit randomly I have suddenly realised what it is that my brain has been trying to tell me for weeks about my project on the Russian tourism in Dalian. My research has been taking me more and more toward the constructed environment around tourism and how man interacts with it and in this regard it just wasn’t fitting in with the straight narrative approach originally intended of following a group of Russian tourists about.
If I instead focus on the narrative of the spaces used for tourism within Dalian, one of the growing tourist destinations within China, and focus this on how nature and the constructed environment interact, this project would have far more interest. The Russian tourists would still feature but so would the chinese because Dalian is a popular tourist spot for both.
The next question would be how would this project be narrative. Through the use of multimedia the images would move from depictions of nature largely untouched through hints at the impact of man and then progress to imagery which depicts the manufactured environment as the main focus with only minor hints at the presence of nature. Technically this would involve some panning shots across the still images interlaced with detail still images environmental portraits and landscapes. As far as sound goes at this point i am looking at mostly ambient sound which changes focus from nature to artificial sounds along with the imagery and quite pssibly some voice over.
The previous research for this project is all still relevant with perhaps the exception of the middle class statistics for the Russians. These will need to be updated with statistics about the history of devlopment within China and its growing tourist trade.
