Tourism and Photography Conference

In July 2003 there was a conference in Sheffield, UK, on Tourism and Photography.  Anouska Komlosy of St Andrews university presented a paper on Photography, Ethnic Tourism and Self Representation.  Just reading the abstract it presents an interesting idea of the ethics of using images as tourist propaganda, very much fitting in with imagined geographies and representations of subjects, and also questioning how images may have a positive or negative impact upon the subjects.

Tourism & Photography Conference

The majority of photography produced focusing on tourism is of this imagined geographies style which seeks to beautify a place and serves only as propaganda.  This is one of the aspects of tourist photography that I seek to challenge with my up coming body of work on the Russian tourists on Dalian by focusing on the real experience of tourists in a place rather than the advertised experience.
