This is going to be the subject of my issues’s based project for my MA.
Contemporary photography on China by foreign artists tends to focus expressly on the many problems imagined by Western audiences faced by the ordinary Chinese, and its position as a major producer of shoddy mechandise for the world market. What these views tend to ignore is the massive rise in the past 10-15 years of a new Middle class in the Communist country aided by increased incomes. China’s population have also now become one of the World’s number one consumers as well as suppliers in the world economy.
There has however been a lot of literature published about this new economic change within China so this work will find a somewhat unique position when compared to the traditional depictions for Western audiences.
